We are overjoyed to be bringing the most successful and internationally-recognised Aboriginal Band in Australia – Yothu Yindi – to the Yarrabah stage. With the band’s five original members sharing the stage for the first time since M Yunupingu’s passing in 2013, and Yirrnga Yunupingu stepping into his uncle’s role as lead vocalist, their set is sure to be a moving reunion, that brings their iconic, timeless and important canon back to the forefront. Yothu Yindi rose to stardom with their song "Treaty,” which peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA singles chart in 1991, with their related album Tribal Voice peaking at No. 4 on the albums chart. We are excited to bring ARIA Hall of famers back to the spotlight to share their incredible repertoire and message of mutual respect between cultures.
Hailed as ‘the Fresh Prince of Arnhem Land’, Baker Boy will be taking to the Jilara Oval stage this June! Raised in the remote NT communities of Yurrwi and Maningrida, 22-year-old Danzal Baker represents his bloodlines by rapping in Yolngu Matha language. A strikingly talented artist on an undeniable rise, Baker Boy exploded onto the scene with two singles – “Marryuna” and “Cloud 9” – earning their spot-on triple j’s 2018 Hottest 100. Young, strong and proud, Baker Boy has the industry talking and is quickly developing a name for himself as one of Australia’s greatest hip hop stars. Don’t miss what is sure to be a truly electric performance this June when Baker Boy heads to Yarrabah!
Filling out what is already a star-laden line-up is the impeccable up-and-coming dance hall queen, Thandi Phoenix. At just 24, the Sydney singer-songwriter comes lauded in praise as one of Australia’s brightest rising stars with songs that blend pop with electronica and raw, honest storytelling. Perhaps what’s most striking about this incredible artist are her immense vocals. Powerful, soulful and honest, Thandi is proving a force to be reckoned with in the Australian music scene. Believe us when we say: you don’t want to miss her performance as she takes the stage at Yarrabah!
Yarrabah Music & Cultural Festival not only showcases world-class music, it builds upon the community’s cultural heritage, sharing and preserving Yarrabah’s cultural legacy for generations to come. It represents a meeting of cultures, a sharing of knowledge and a celebration of Yarrabah’s past, present and future, with local art, workshops and cultural experiences on offer throughout the day.
