Queensland Music Festival and Queensland Ballet bring 1920s classic to life in song and dance

Queensland Music Festival and Queensland Ballet have partnered up to bring classic Australian bush tale The Little Green Road to Fairyland to life for families across the state.

A vintage Australian children’s book, long out of print, The Little Green Road to Fairyland is the tale of a fairy questing to return from the mortal world to Fairyland, after relinquishing fairyhood for human form.

Set in the Australian bush, the magical fairy – which was inspired by the original 1922 story by Annie R. Rentoul and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite takes audiences on a charming journey with colourful sets and costumes that will delight imaginations from start to finish.

Audiences of all ages will have a chance at witnessing the brand new production from Queensland Music Festival and Queensland Ballet, with The Little Green Road to Fairyland taking over the QPAC Playhouse throughout July.

Families in regional areas across Queensland will, for the first time, have an opportunity to see the show in new and unique locations, with The Little Green Road to Fairyland production popping up in Roma, St George, and Goondiwindi throughout June.

Reimagined by renowned Australian choreographer Paul Boyd, The Little Green Road to Fairyland will feature an original score from Elena Kats-Chernin, performed by Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra and angelic vocals from Kristin Berardi and on selected shows, Queensland Music Festival Artistic Director Katie Noonan.

“The Little Green Road to Fairyland is an amazing project that really captures the heart and essence of what the Queensland Music Festival is all about,” said Katie Noonan. “This is the first time the festival is collaborating with the Queensland Ballet and to be coming together to showcase this classic Australian story for families of all ages showcases uniquely Australian literature, dance and song in one joyous original production. Not only will the season give people across the state the opportunity to engage with this amazing work, but it adds an exquisite new work to Australia’s cultural vernacular that can continue to ignite imaginations for centuries.”

Queensland Ballet Artistic Director, Li Cunxin, said the Company is thrilled to partner with Queensland Music Festival to perform this very special production of The Little Green Road to Fairyland across Queensland.

“It’s such a whimsical tale that will spark the imagination of our youngest audiences with messages of hope, compassion and a touch of fairy magic,” Mr Li said.“QB and Queensland Music Festival share a commitment to taking the arts beyond our cities and into the regions to ensure that all Queenslanders have access to the arts, and The Little Green Road to Fairyland gives us an opportunity to just that, to reconnect with our wider community.”
